Categories of Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs)

Category I

Alternative Investment Funds that invest in start-up or early-stage ventures or social ventures or SMEs or infrastructure, including venture capital funds, SME funds, social venture funds, infrastructure funds, angel funds, etc.

Eligibility

Investors can be Indian, foreign, or NRI. However, for angel funds, investors can only invest as angel investors

Each investor should make a minimum investment of Rs. 1 crore, (or Rs. 25 lakhs in case of employees/Fund Managers/Directors of AIF or angel investors), as applicable

Maximum number of investors can be 1000 for each scheme and 49 for angel funds.

CAT I & CAT II:
There is a pass-through status for CAT I & CAT II, which means that the fund’s income or loss (other than business income) is taxed at the investor’s end.
CAT III:
CAT III funds are taxable at the fund level. This has no pass-through status and the highest tax rate (as per the current tax slab) is charged on the profit made by this fund.
